The Pharmacist Degree: A Doctor Of Pharmacy (D.Pharm)

Education and training associated with becoming a pharmacist is notoriously long process. Not only my students start from an early age, are becoming proficient in high school, but they must also achieve the grades in order to get into university to complete a pharmacy degree. In the United States, official pharmacists, including professionals in both retail and clinical situations, must complete some kind of pharmacy degree in order to become recognized.

One of the most important hurdles in becoming a pharmacist is the fact that students must ensure that they are motivated within high school in order to achieve the high grades required by universities in order to partake in a pharmacy degree course. Achieving a doctor of pharmacy, as the degree is known, is very competitive, and therefore many students try harder and harder every year in order to get higher grades to ensure their place at university. The resulting scenario is one in which the prerequisites increase year-on-year, making it harder for the students of the future. However, with the right determination and motivation any student interested in medicine should be capable of getting onto the pharmacy course if they show that former high school.

Many universities look for students with high grades in high school, however, and think they do look for is some kind of experience. Most usually, the only experience of students can obtain is that a voluntary work in, for example health clinics and hospitals. However, such voluntary work is still highly regarded by universities, and shows some kind of commitment and interest in the subject. Once an application has been credited, it is easy to see how experience can add to the authenticity of the students desire to become a pharmacist.

Once a student has been accepted onto a pharmacy course, then they begin a bachelors pharmacist degree, known as a doctor of pharmacy degree. This course, in the US, normally takes between 3 and 4 years, and can be taken at almost any medical school. As pharmacy is a popular course, there is normally quite a large cohort of students taking such a degree. Therefore, a lot of organization and determination is required to get through the course.

Due to the nature of pharmacy as a subject and profession, the doctor pharmacy courses generally speaking, start out with a wide view of which subjects to take. Example, physics, chemistry and biology are all used to some extent in the beginning phases of a pharmacist degree. However, as a qualification begins to get more complex, many students find themselves in a situation where they're studying the much more specialized topics within pharmacy itself.

Once a pharmacist has completed her degree course, but only are they on the right track to becoming a professional, but they may also choose to work in a retail environment. It is obvious, but perhaps the most popular choice for pharmacists is a retail environment. Many retail pharmacies, or drugstores, the graduate pharmacists applying for jobs. After all, pharmacists are more than qualified, after 4 years of training and with license exams, to carry out their duties to the public.
